Artist Profile — Alicia Bilyara Bennett
Alicia Bilyara Bennett is a descendant of the Barkindji people of the Darling River Basin in Far West New South Wales, Australia and the Ngalakan people in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia.
Bennett is a self-taught artist, having been inspired and mentored by her artist mother, father and grandmother. Bennett began painting professionally in 2021 shortly after the passing of her father, Crunchy Bennett — renowned Indigenous artist and emu egg carver. She held her debut solo with Jerico Contemporary in 2022, through which she showcased a collection of monochrome works — a contemporary exploration of line works. Since her debut show, Bennett has exhibited with galleries in Queensland and across New South Wales.
Bennett is passionate about sharing the stories of her family, and through her artwork, hopes to build recognition, understanding and celebration of her language and heritage. Bennett is currently working from her home studio in Woolooware, Dharwal Country. She is taking on private commissions and working on exclusive collections, from which she contributes a portion of proceeds to communities in need.
