Artist Profile — Giorgia Bel
Giorgia Bel is a Newcastle-based artist specialising in acrylic and oil-based paintings.
Giorgia began her practice in 2015, and is self-taught, having previously studied Architecture and Design in Sydney. Giorgia played with paint and sketch to help soothe through illness, and for this time, painting helped to heal. It soon became a great love and a way of life for her.
Giorgia loves using colour and textures to create depth in her abstract and organic works; for her, it stirs an excitement, and brings clarity. Giorgia most often uses muted tones with surprising yet subtle hints of brighter hues to stimulate a captured eye. Her focus is on imagined and seen landscapes, still life and the human form.
Giorgia is drawn to the natural ochres and pigments that are native to the Australian earth. Her palette and subjects hum a meditative silence of the bush and landscape of this Sunburnt Country – the palette and repetition of her subject echo a melancholia in her rhetoric. With looming, skeletal trees in the foreground, these works draw the viewer in, posing a question – will you take a moment to bask in the silence?
