Cindy Leong’s delicate, minimalist works encourage quiet contemplation. Born in Aotearoa / New Zealand with Malaysian-Chinese heritage, Leong's practice investigates the point of convergence where abstract painting methodologies intersect with spiritual and Eastern philosophical thought. Leong is particularly interested in painting as a process of meditation, enforcing stillness and presence during the creation of her works. A dialogue with time is certainly evident in Leong's paintings — each work a culmination of meticulous, repetitive mark making, signifying infinite points in the continuum. “Repetition enables my mind to enter a state of flow. Over time, the brush becomes an extension of my hand; each iteration, each moment, passing through to the next."

Leong's artistic language is influenced by the prevalent nature surrounding her, her works exploring and echoing the calming, neutral tones of earth and sea. Preferring the use of tactile and naturalistic materials, Leong primarily opts for oil paint and linen canvas — this intentional choice of materials emulating organic elements. Through her works, Leong aims to cultivate a feeling of groundedness akin to "the transcendental calm that one may feel when they are met with the ocean horizon encompassing their field of vision".

When viewing the works of ‘Conversations With Time’, there is the sensation of an unfurling existence, with every meticulous brushstroke capturing a unique moment in time that cannot be replicated or erased. The myriad marks traversing the canvas symbolise the stored consciousness we harbour — a tenet within Eastern philosophical thought which resonates with Leong. Each work within this collection bears a visual language reflecting the process of emptying her mind — captured in calming hues and a sensibility with nature in consideration. Leong’s practice encourages complete presence and stillness, both during the creation process and in the contemplation of her works.
